Camp Oliver is hiring responsible, hard working people who love working with children in the outdoors at a residential summer camp. The goal of Camp Oliver’s staff members is to ensure that our campers are having fun in a safe, positive environment. Working at Camp Oliver is a powerful experience. Not only will you grow through new friendships and daily challenges, you will play an integral part in helping children have an experience that will create lifetime memories.

All summer positions are full-time from late June to mid August. Camper sessions, with the exception of Family Camp, are from Sunday through Friday. Staff members are required to leave the Camp’s property for their weekends off. Staff that live outside of San Diego County usually make arrangements to stay with their new camp friends on the weekends.

The following are brief job descriptions for positions available for summer employment. Salaries are negotiated individually, per camper session, and are based upon age and experience. Salaries include room and board, accident insurance, and training. All staff is required to be CPR/First Aid certified. Camp Oliver will sponsor a day for all staff to become certified in this area.

Program Director: Age 21 and older – DMV printout required. Responsible for creating a safe, fun, camp program for the youth that we serve. The Program Director creates weekly cabin schedules with Camp Oliver’s Cabin Leaders. The Program Director also works closely with the Camp Director to run camp in an orderly fashion. At times, the Program Director might be in charge of camp in absence of Camp Director and/or Co-director. The Program Director also supervises staff and assists in staff training week. Two (2) years previous camp programming experience is highly preferred.

Head Counselor: Age 21 and older – DMV printout required. Assist in hiring staff when possible and work as a liaison between staff and the Leadership Team. The Head Counselor mediates staff problems in a kind and orderly fashion. The Head Counselor is the main supervisor of camp counselors and ensures that the care of the campers and the operation of the overall camp program is being done properly. Previous camp experience preferred.

CIT Director: Age 21 and older – DMV printout required. Develop, organize and operate the three week Counselor in Training program for up to six youth, aged 15 years old. The CIT Director is the direct supervisor for the CIT's. The CIT Director is the leader, mentor and mediator for Camp Oliver’s CITs. The CIT Director is also a part of Camp Oliver’s overall Leadership Team and assists in Staff Training and other duties as assigned.

Health Supervisor/Nurse: NP, RN licensed in the state of California and/or Certified to operate a residential summer camp Health and Wellness facility as per the regulations of the American Camp Association and the State of California Department of Environmental Health. DMV printout required. Experience in a camp, school, or other public health setting helping children preferred. The Health Supervisor is responsible for instructing staff on health and safety procedures and will guide staff in reporting illness, injury and unsafe conditions that might contribute to accidents. The Health Supervisor will report admissions into the infirmary to the Camp Director, administer all medications, keep record of infirmary activity and prepare and maintain each cabin’s first aid kit. The Health Supervisor will also conduct a physical check of each camper upon their arrival to camp, review their health records and become familiar with insurance forms.

Head Chef: Age 25 and older – DMV printout and current Food Handler's Card required. Experience in purchasing/ordering large quantities of food and knowledge of nutritional needs of campers and staff is expected. The Head Chef will also supervise kitchen staff, have the ability to adjust to camp resources, conditions and program, and will plan 10-day cycles of menus. As Head Chef, you will prepare, cook, and serve food using surplus commodities. You will be cooking each meal for approximately 100 people. It is also the responsibility of the Head Chef to keep records of purchases, food storage and maintain the budget that is provided. Another aspect of this position is the cleaning and care of kitchen equipment and floors. You will also be responsible for cleaning and closing down the kitchen at the end of the summer. The Head Chef is accountable to the Camp Director.

Assistant Chef: Age 18 and older – Experience in quantity cooking and food preparation. Current Food Handler's Card required. The Assistant Chef must be able to take direction from Head Chef and is responsible for sanitation and cleanliness of kitchen at all times. You will also share responsibilities with the Head Chef and complete other duties assigned by Camp Director.

Dish Washer: Age 16 and older – Current Food Handler's Card required. Experience in the area of kitchen cleaning and food preparation is preferred. The Dish Washer will also assist the Head Chef and Assistant Chef with the preparation and serving of meals. You will also be responsible for cleaning and washing utensils, pans, and mopping the floor of the kitchen and dining room after every meal. You will also be expected to ensure the cleanliness of the kitchen and storage areas at all times.

Aquatics Director/Lifeguard WSI: Age 21 and older for Aquatics Director. Age 18 and older for Lifeguard WSI. Current Water Safety Instruction and Red Cross Certifications Required. Camp Oliver pool staff must have experience with youth pool programs, the ability to observe and respond to dangers at the pool, test each camper's ability, and keep pool locked while off duty. The Camp Oliver Aquatics Team will remain at the pool area anytime campers and staff are present. You will be required to wear a uniform red bathing suit while on duty and participate in overall camp program. Aquatics Team members serve as Camp Counselors when not lifeguarding. You will also be asked to perform other camp duties as assigned.

Arts & Crafts Specialist: Age 18 and older - DMV printout is required. The Camp Oliver Arts & Crafts Specialist must have the ability to organize, teach, and supervise campers and staff during scheduled arts and crafts time. The Arts & Crafts Specialist must have knowledge of camp arts and crafts projects, and lead campers in the creation of at least two projects campers can bring home. You will also be required to maintain a working inventory of all supplies and keep the art area clean and neat. The person in this position also participates in overall camp program as a Camp Counselor when not leading Arts & Crafts.

Nature Specialist: Age 18 and older – DMV printout is required. This position requires having knowledge of endangered species, animals in our community, ecology and conservation. You must also have the ability to create, teach and supervise campers and staff a nature based program. The Nature Specialist also works with the Arts & Crafts specialist and Program Director when creating your program. The person in this position will also participate in the overall camp program as a Camp Counselor when not leading nature activities.

Cabin Leader: Age 18 and older, High School Graduate preferred – Cabin Leaders are hard working, have the ability to follow directions and help others do the same, are honest and able to organize, supervise and lead activities for youth ages 6-16. As a Cabin Leader, you will be responsible for your cabin of up to 12 campers and up to 3 staff. You will work with the Program Director in the overall weekly schedule for your cabin. You will be a leader amongst the campers and staff. Cabin Leaders are enthusiastic, work well with other staff members and are able to observe and respond to the needs of our campers. You will also live with our campers and participate in overall camp program and staff meetings. You will also be asked to perform other duties as assigned.

Cabin Counselor: Age 16 and older – Cabin Counselors are expected to be hard working, honest, and able to work well with youth ages 6-12. You must also be able to follow directions, the rules of Camp Oliver and help others to do the same. Cabin Counselors are enthusiastic people who work well with their fellow staff members. You will also live with campers, respond to their needs, assist with activities, and participate in overall camp program. You will also be asked to perform other duties as assigned.

Counselor in Training: Age 15—The Counselor in Training (CIT) Program at Camp Oliver is a three week program wherein you will be involved in an extensive, two week training that is lead by our Counselor in Training Director. During the third week of the program, you will be in a cabin with campers and staff, serving as a counselor. The fee for the CIT Program is $300 for the three week program. You will also receive volunteer service hours per the request of your high school. The CIT program is a great way to begin building your work history.

Specialists: Age 18 and older – We also have the positions of Archery, Drama and Dance Specialists available. You may apply for these positions directly. Previous experience leading Archery, Drama or Dance classes for youth ages 6-16 is extremely preferred. Certification as per the American Camp Association is required to perform as the Archery Specialist at Camp Oliver. When you are not leading an activity in your area of specialty, you will serve as a Camp Counselor and live with a cabin group of up to three staff members and up to 12 campers.
